Labayk Allahuma Labayk Labayk. La shareeka laka Labayk. Innal hamda wannimata laka wal mulk. La shareeka Lak

(Here I am at your service, oh Lord, here I am - here I am. No partner do you have. Here I am. Truly, the praise and the favor are yours, and the dominion. No partner do you have.)

These are the words chanted by some two million people from across Saudi Arabia and throughout the world heading, as if pulled by a magnet, to one single spot on Earth. As has happened every year for 14 centuries, Muslim pilgrims gather in Makkah to perform rituals based on those conducted by the Prophet Muhammad during his last visit to the city.

The Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca) is the pillar of Islam. Once in a lifetime every Muslim, man or woman, is expected, unless it is impossible, to make a pilgrimage (a Hajj) to Mecca. The word Hajj means, literally, repairing to place for the sake visit, and in the terminology of the Islamic Shariah, it means implies repairing to Bait-Allah (the House of Allah, one of the names of Al – Ka’aba) to observe the necessary devotions.

The Holy Prophet of Islam (S.A.W.) said: In 4 occasions the doors of sky are opened and prayers will be accepted; on the occasion of coincidence of the rows of fighters in the cause of God, when it rains and in the time of getting up for saying prayers and at the time of looking at the great Ka’aba.

One Umrah is expiation for the sins committed between it and another Umrah. (Bukhari, Muslim). Abu Hurairah (R) narrates that the Prophet (S.A.W.) said, ‘An Umrah to another Umrah will be redemption of sins for whatever (minor) occurs between them.’ (Bukhari, Muslim).

As a technical term used in the Shari’ah, Umrah means to perform Tawaf of Kaabah and Sa’i between Al-Safa and Al-Marwah, after assuming Ihram, either from a Miqat or a place in Hill. It is sometimes called the ‘minor pilgrimage’ or ‘lesser pilgrimage’, the Hajj being the ‘major’ pilgrimage and which is compulsory for every able-bodied Muslim who can afford it. The Umrah is not compulsory but highly recommended
